AUSTRALIAN CITIZENSHIP DAY

Australian Citizenship Day on 17 September 2010. Recently, 20 people from seven countries, including from Japan became the UK, India and Korea, Australian citizens in a special ceremony held in Bernie, Tasmania to launch the Australian Citizenship Day 2010th.Thousands of people in Australia will be Australian citizens in citizenship celebration.

A representative of the Australian Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) had this to say:

"Australian citizenship days in 2001 as an opportunity for people to be proud of our citizenship and reflect on the meaning and importance of being Australian."

"Citizenship is the bond that unites us all in our national cultural diversity. It symbolizes our sense of belonging to the country where we have been born or have decided to make our home.

"Australian citizenship celebrations provide an opportunity for us all to be proud to be part of this great nation. There is also a special day for our newest Australians to join our family at ceremonies around the country."

Some highlights from the Australian citizenship celebrations September 17, 2010 are as follows:
  • About 3600 people from 118 countries will become Australian citizens at 69 ceremonies across Australia as part of Australian citizenship day.
  • There will be ceremonies of DIAC and local councils in cities and major urban centers and towns throughout Australia.
  • Ceremony venues will vary from Adelaide's Town Hall to the Shire of Yalgoo in Western Australia Mid West region.
  • The citizenship ceremony with the highest number (223) become Australian citizens will be at Brimbank City Council in Victoria. A person will become an Australian citizen in Bombal Shire in New South Wales.
Australia needs new migrants to how many eventually become Australian citizens. As mentioned in a recent news report, but high immigration, the Australian economy will be hit hard by the shortage of skilled workers now and in the future.
